Oliver McGowan
The training is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death highlighted the urgent need for improved training in learning disabilities and autism for health and social care employees. Its purpose is to ensure participants develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to effectively support the people in their care.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the government – and NHS – preferred and recommended training for the health and care sector. Under the Health and Care Act 2022, training in learning disabilities and autism became a legal requirement for all regulated services, with the aim of reducing health inequalities and ensuring that everyone receives safe, appropriate and person-centred care.
The core principle of the training is that all content is developed and delivered in collaboration with people with learning disabilities and autistic people.
